Second Chances
Wedding Showdown

Sonic tossed and turned for most of the night. It was the night before his and Scourge’s wedding, and his mind was just full of thoughts and it would not allow him to go to sleep. After thrashing for a couple of minutes, he finally settled down and faced Scourge, who was on the other side of the bed.
“Are you ready to admit that you can’t fall asleep?” Scourge asked, his eyes blinking.
“Have you been awake this whole time?” Sonic asked, trying to get a good look at Scourge in the darkness of their room.
“It’s hard to sleep when your fiancé is starting an earthquake,” Scourge said, trying to lighten the mood.
“Heh, sorry,” Sonic said.
“Don’t be sorry. It isn’t necessary,” Scourge said.
Sonic nodded. “I know. I’ve just been thinking about… things.”
Scourge looked down. “Yeah, I know what things you’re talking about, and they aren’t worth thinking about. If Shadow wants to be stupid, then he can be stupid. He just can’t take you away from me.”
“I would never go with him,” Sonic said. “I’m stuck with you, okay?”
“I know that,” Scourge said. “For once, after so many years, I can honestly say that I trust one of my main rivals.”
“That’s funny,” Sonic said, chuckling. “I was just about to say the same thing about you.”
“Oh, so that’s how we’re going to play, huh?” Scourge asked. “I can play that way too, you know?”
“I was hoping for that. Otherwise it wouldn’t be very fun.”
“Heh, you got me there,” Scourge said. “Just… don’t be worried tomorrow. I already know that I’m going to be flipping out when I get there, and at least one of us needs to be sane in the end. I’d rather it be you than neither of us.”
“Why are you going to be flipping out?” Sonic asked.
“Because I know myself pretty well.”
“Fair enough,” Sonic said. “Let’s just get some sleep, okay? I promise I won’t start anymore earthquakes.”
“Good,” Scourge replied. “I thought the bed was going to break.”
Sonic chuckled a bit to himself. “Liar. I wasn’t shaking that much.”
“You can keep telling yourself that,” Scourge said jokingly.
“Fine,” Sonic said, kissing Scourge on the cheek. “Good night.”

The following morning, Scourge woke up and immediately noticed that Sonic was already out of bed. Scourge may have been lazy, but he knew that he normally woke up before Sonic did. He quickly got out of bed, hoping that Sonic was still around. When he heard someone in the kitchen, he let out a quick breath of relief.
He passed by the kitchen and said, “You’re up early.”
“Yes, well… while you slept like a log, I couldn’t even sleep a little,” Sonic said. “Too much on my mind, I guess.” He carried a couple of mugs over to Scourge. “Coffee?”
Scourge grabbed a mug from Sonic’s right hand and thanked him for it before taking a sip. “Yeah, I get it. I didn’t go back to sleep right away, either. Hopefully you’re not too tired for this afternoon. We’re supposed to actually be in full attendance for our wedding.”
“Naaah,” Sonic said with a bit of sass. “I was actually planning on skipping it. Maybe go to a pool and go for a long swim.”
“Yeah. More like a long drown,” Scourge said, placing a hand on his hip.
“Subtle.”
“I know.”
Sonic smirked. “I’ll be fine, though. The adrenaline will start kicking in soon, and everything will be alright.”
“I know,” Scourge said. “I was never worried.”
“Liar,” Sonic said, wrapping his arms around Scourge.
“Well… I was mostly never worried.”
Sonic leaned his head on Scourge’s shoulder. “Liar.”
“Well, I made it through,” Scourge said, rolling his eyes. “Besides, you didn’t do much better than I did.”
“True, but at least I accepted that early on,” Sonic said with a faint smile.
Scourge rolled his eyes. “Fine, whatever.” He heard the doorbell ring. “I’ll get it.” He slowly got out of Sonic’s grip and sluggishly walked to the door. He rubbed his eyes and yawned before opening it and revealing Tails on the other side. “Tails, what are you doing here?”
“I was on my way over to the wedding location and I realized that I got a few more signed wedding invitations a couple of days ago.” Tails handed Scourge a few envelopes.
Scourge grabbed the envelopes and sighed. “Some people are getting really lazy, almost submitting these things on the day of the wedding…”
“I wasn’t too happy about it, either,” Tails said. “But that’s okay. We have several open seats, so we’ll definitely fit everyone.”
“Thank you, Tails,” Scourge said with a yawn.
Tails nodded. “You’re welcome. Say hi to Sonic for me.” He walked away from the door.
“You got it,” Scourge said before closing the door. He walked back to the kitchen and began opening envelopes, all of them seeming fairly ordinary. “Tails says hi.”
“Oh,” Sonic said with a drowsy tone before taking another sip of his coffee. “What’d he give you?”
“More wedding invitations. Most of them say that they won’t be attending, though, so it’s no big deal.” Scourge flipped through the invitations and eventually got to the last one. He opened the envelope and pulled the piece of paper inside. He unfolded it and the first thing he spotted made him cringe.
The name on top was ‘Shadow’ and he checked the box that said he would be in attendance. “Sonic,” Scourge said, a bit shocked.
“What? Is there something wrong?” he asked as he poured himself another cup of coffee.
“We didn’t send an invite to Shadow, right? We told him he wasn’t allowed to come, right?”
“Of course,” Sonic said. “After all that he has done, he obviously shouldn’t be at our wedding. I made that pretty clear.”
“Then explain this…” Scourge said as he turned the invitation towards Sonic.
Sonic looked at the invitation and it served to wake him up a bit more. He cleared his throat. “It… it’s okay. I can handle this. I guarantee that Shadow will not show up.”
“You guarantee?” Scourge asked.
“Guarantee. Besides, this could be an old invitation that got lost in the mail.” Sonic tried to remain calm and positive. “Why would he blatantly tell us that he was going to show up?”
“To send a message,” Scourge said, crossing his arms.
“Shadow isn’t like that,” Sonic said. “I mean… he hasn’t been acting like Shadow lately, but he wouldn’t do that. He’s smarter than that.”
Scourge sighed. “I really hope that you’re right. This was the one thing stressing me out, and now it’s back.”
“I have it under control,” Sonic said. The truth was, he didn’t have it at all under control. But, as long as Scourge was under distress, then Sonic would be distressed as well. He just needed to relieve the tension before the wedding started. He could deal with the Shadow situation later.

An hour later, Tails arrived at the wedding location. It was a garden area with a nice terrace. Amy highly recommended it for Sonic and Scourge. They felt they had no other choice, mainly because many of the traditional wedding locations were already booked.
He dressed in his tuxedo and went outside to direct everyone to start preparing the decorations. Though, it didn’t last long because Tails got a call from Sonic. He didn’t know whether to be concerned or not, so he picked up the call.
Sonic and Tails talked for a short time and Tails eventually ended the call. He walked up to Knuckles and said, “We might have a bit of a problem.”
“That doesn’t sound good,” Knuckles said as he tried to put up a banner. “The wedding starts in an hour. Is it really serious?”
“Well… you remember the whole Shadow issue that Sonic told us about,” Tails said. “That’s… that’s the problem right now.”
Knuckles dropped the banner. He cursed to himself before turning to Tails. “What happened?”
Tails explained to Knuckles what Sonic had told him over the phone. “We just need to make sure that Shadow doesn’t show up and crash the wedding. This means too much to Sonic. We can’t let Shadow screw this up.”
Knuckles nodded as he walked across the room. “Yeah, and we need to make sure that they’re both comfortable, too. They’re probably on the verge of exploding. Wedding jitters and a big problem don’t go well together.”
“I’ll take care of that,” Tails said. “I just need to make sure that they have everything they need so they don’t have anything else to worry about. That’ll at least lighten the load.”
“Thank you, Tails,” Knuckles said. “I’ll worry about the security. If anyone enters without being invited, then they’ll be thrown out.”
“It’s come to that?” Tails asked.
“Yeah…” Knuckles said, sighing.
Tails sighed as well. “Fine, let’s just get this going.” Tails walked away and continued with the preparations. At this point, he was being extra cautious, making sure that everything was absolutely perfect so that Sonic and Scourge had absolutely nothing to worry about. When he felt that everything was clear, he finally gave himself a break. Sonic and Scourge were due in about ten minutes, and Tails had the untidy task of making sure that they didn’t freak out. He didn’t look forward to it, but he knew it was important.
Though, things went smoother than he expected. He checked on Sonic and Scourge and they both managed well with the stress. He figured that they had enough time to cool down and figure out what was going on. This gave him a sigh of relief.
Tails went out onto the altar. Everyone was there and the preparations were officially complete. He actually felt accomplished for this hard work.
“You did good, Tails,” Knuckles said, smiling. “Those two are perking up just fine. I think we’re going to have a wedding.”
“Thank you,” Tails said, turning to the echidna. “And you… dealt with our little situation, right?”
“Security hidden in every spot that I can think of,” Knuckles said. “They won’t be a nuisance too much. They’ll stay out of the way and they’ll only go after Shadow. I’ve given them enough pictures so they can’t screw that up.”
“I hope so…” Tails said. “Because remember the last time that Shadow screwed things up.”
“You mean when everyone thought that Sonic was Shadow and imprisoned him?” Knuckles asked.
“Yes, that,” Tails said with a chuckle. “Just make sure that your friends don’t tackle the groom, alright?”
Knuckles smirked. “You got it.”
Tails rolled his eyes as he and Knuckles got into position. The officiant finally walked down the aisle and greeted everyone, reminding them of the routine one last time. “You all prepared? Everyone stress-free?”
Knuckles and Tails nodded and smiled. “Yep,” Tails responded. “We’re ready to throw a wedding.”
“Good. Already off to a great start, then. The grooms are here, I presume.”
“In their dressing rooms, ma’m,” Knuckles said.
“Perfect. Then someone better notify them soon. We’re planning for this to start in ten minutes.”
“I’ll do it,” Knuckles said as he walked off.
Tails smiled as everything fell into place. Almost all of the chairs were filled, so they were definitely going to have a full wedding.

Shortly after, the wedding began. Scourge and Sonic went down the aisle as they were supposed to and they exchanged a few vows. Tails was almost enchanted by the words, and it was even better with the soft, soothing music in the background. This was definitely a wedding that Tails was going to remember for the rest of his life.
Finally, Sonic and Scourge finished their vows and turned to the officiant. She nodded with a soft smile. “Simply beautiful from both of you.” She looked to Tails and said, “May I have the rings?”
Tails nodded with a smile. He began looking in one coat pocket and searched everywhere. He then searched in another and then another, worrying everyone. He then reached into an inconspicuous side pocket and pulled out the two rings. He chuckled and said, “If you didn’t want to freak out, then you shouldn’t have given the ring bearer a jacket with a hundred pockets.”
Everyone laughed. Tails handed the rings over to the officiant.
“Sonic, hold out your palm.” Sonic put his right hand forward. She put the ring in it. “As you put the ring on Scourge’s finger, do you take him as your husband?”
Sonic slid the ring onto Scourge’s ring finger. “I do.”
She then put the ring in Scourge’s hand. “As you put the ring on Sonic’s finger, do you take him as your husband?”
Scourge slid the ring on Sonic’s ring finger. “I do.”
The officiant smiled. ‘Another successful marriage,’ she thought to herself. “I now pronounce yo--…”
“Don’t you dare finish that sentence!” Sonic looked around, recognizing the voice that had just called out.
In a matter of moments, a bring light appeared in the center of the aisle. As the light subsided, a figure appeared. Shadow. He had chaos-controlled into the wedding.
He stood up and looked to Sonic with a heavy gaze. “Sonic, I’m making a final warning that you don’t want to marry Scourge. You don’t know what he has done. He has no capability of being a husband to you.”
Sonic turned to Scourge, who had a terrifying look on his face. Sonic didn’t even reply to Shadow and just put his arms around Scourge. “Just ignore him, Scourge. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” Sonic turned to face Tails. “Tails, help me out here!”
Tails and a few of the groomsmen nodded and ran out to deal with Shadow. Sonic turned to Scourge, who was getting more enraged.
“Scourge, just ignore him.”
Scourge shook his head and finally escaped Sonic’s grasp. He then ran after Shadow, despite all of the groomsmen in his way. “I’m not just going to ignore this, Sonic. Stay up there while I deal with this maggot.”
Sonic blinked. Scourge looked like he was actually prepared to tear Shadow apart. In truth… he was.
